Gearbox Remapping

Gearbox remapping, also known as transmission control unit (TCU) tuning, is a process of adjusting the software controlling the vehicle’s automatic transmission to improve its performance, efficiency, and response.

The main functions of the gearbox or transmission control unit include:

Shifting Points: Determines at what engine speed (RPM) the transmission will shift from one gear to the next. By adjusting these points, one can change when the vehicle shifts to provide a more aggressive acceleration profile or a more fuel-efficient one.

Shift Speed: Controls how quickly the transmission shifts between gears. Quicker shifts can lead to improved acceleration and a sportier feel.

Torque Limiters: Some vehicles have torque limiters in place to protect the transmission from sudden high torque loads. Remapping can adjust or remove these limiters to take full advantage of engine upgrades.

Clutch Pressure: In dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs), the clutch pressure can be adjusted to ensure the clutches engage more firmly, reducing slip and improving the speed of shifts.

Gearbox remapping can be particularly beneficial when combined with engine (ECU) remapping. If a vehicle’s engine is tuned for higher performance, it’s crucial that the transmission can handle the increased power and torque and use it effectively.

However, it’s essential to ensure that gearbox remapping is done by professionals familiar with the specific transmission’s limits and characteristics. Pushing the gearbox beyond its limits can lead to premature wear or even failure.

ECU remapping involves reading the vehicle’s default programming from its processing chip and adjusting multiple parameters within that program. This includes variables like fuel pressure, boost pressure (for turbocharged vehicles), ignition timing, and throttle pedal responsiveness, among others. This adjustment unlocks the engine’s true potential, bringing forth the performance it was initially designed to offer before the manufacturer’s compromises. Each engine has a distinct map, and by altering this, we can optimize the engine’s performance, often enhancing its power and, in many instances, improving fuel efficiency.
